Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Tyrell ( or Tyrrell ) family tomb in Great Burstead parish church The Tyrrell Family were hugely powerful throughout English history. They played an important part in the Norman conquest, and were richly rewarded for it. At various times they have owned many vast manors and estates in Essex, Hampshire, and Normandy and Picardy in France. In August 1100, one Walter Tyrrell the Third, whilst hunting in the New Forest, accidentally shot an arrow through the chest of King William Rufus, and fearing that he would be accused of murdering this unpopular king, took flight. This all took place at a hamlet now called Avon-Tyrrell near Bransgore, Christchurch. He crossed the river Avon at a ford still known as Tyrrellsford, and at a nearby village had the blacksmith replace his horse's shoes the reverse way round, so as to confuse his pursuers. I assume it worked.
