regions of East Africa They are In the south-west Nyasa—350 miles in length—lies 6,000 ft. below the unbroken line of thoLivingstone mountains ; duo west is Tangan-yika, a rock-bound ribbon of water 30 to 45miles wide and over 400 miles long. North ofTanganyika, framed in mighty mountains, liesKivu, a pigmy among its giant neighbours, forits length is only 55 miles, but the most pic-turesque of African lakes. And north of Kivuis a land of wonder and mystery dominated bythe lofty cones of a series of very active vol-canoes, the Mfumbiro Mountains. Eastwardof Mfiimbiro, and comparatively shallow, forit lies on the tableland, not in the RiftVaUey, is the vast expanse of the VictoriaNyanza, with an ai*ea nearly as great as Scot-land. About a fourth of the waters of Nyasa,half of Kivu, and rather more tliau half ofVictoria Nyanza, together with part of theMfumbiro Mountains, were in the Grermanprotectorate. The watei-s of Tanganyika, out-side the three miles limit, were international.
