The Swedes were on the best terms with the Indians duringthe whole of this period, but immediately upon his arrival Rid-der came into conflict with the Dutch, who informed the Swedesthat they would not be allowed to sail up the river above theDutch fort; indeed that they had no right in the river whatever. A few days after his landing Ridder prepared the sloop andwent up the stream with a favorable wind, the Swedish com-missioner having been prevented from passing the Dutchstronghold some days previously. The fort fired three cannonshots and one musket ball at the vessel as it passed by, butRidder continued his journey. On the twent^^-fifth of April hewent ashore at Fort Nassau, and delivered some letters to theHollanders, written by Blommaert, but the Dutch commissionerwas not favorably inclined.
