Portrait of MARGARET DONEGAN By Wm.^Starkweather TfXlllBlTED attheFolsom Gal-J—i lerics in New York city, thisportrait of a studio scrubwomanaroused much interest by its in-troduction of a present-day demo-cratic subject into the traditionallyformal and ecclesiastical visionpicture of early Italian and Span-ish art. In place of a biblicalcharacter or Spanish grandee, Mr.Starkweather substitutes no otherthan Margaret Donegan, studioscrubwoman, mother of a boy whohas been killed in a mill. Inno-ticed by the artist or his model, she stands before us, arrested ather mop and pail by a vision ofher son being received into heaven. The central color is the fadedblue of the vjork-a-day dress andapron. The smock of the unper-eeiving artist is ochre, balanced hythe gold-and-yellovj robe of hismodel on the other side. Thesecolors art reflected in the visionabove the clouds, while the tearof the studio is a red-brown,deepening into /lack. VOLUME XXXVII, No. 9
