The use of electricity as a motive power in surface andindustrial haulage is strikingly illustrated in two types ofelectric locomotives recently built for the Carnegie SteelCompany and the Illinois Tunnel Company by the Bald-win Locomotive Works and equipped with electrical ap-paratus supplied by the Westinghouse Electric & Manufac-turing Company. The locomotive for the Carnegie SteelCompany is one of two in service at the companys Ohioworks. It is of the mine type, built for standard-gagetrack and fitted with a cab. The width over all is 7 ft. iin., the height to top of cab 10 ft. and the length 10 ft. 8 in. (» 10^— PL.\N AND ELEVATION OF LOCOMOTIVE FOR ILLINOIS TUNNEL ion. The springs are said to give perfect action and at thesame time afford the wheel a maximum of play. In addi-tion to the harp the company makes copper wheels andhigh-speed bushings.
