Text Appearing Before Image:
advertised to the public throughnewspaper articles, folders distributed in the cars and bylarge car window posters. i\t present 50 cars are inservice, but more will be added as rapidly as possible. Toencourage the proper use of these cars the company hasarranged to sell tickets at the rate of twenty-one for $1, or106 for $5, from the leading department stores and otherplaces in or near the territory through which these linesare operated. Tickets at this rate have been on sale forsome time, but they could be purchased only at the com-panys offices. Owing to the fact that the pay-as-you-enter car doesnot differ materially in appearance to the ordinary observer
Text Appearing After Image:
TURNSTILE FOR STREET CARS L. M. Levinson, manager of the Shreveport TractionCompany, of Shreveport, La., has recently invented a turn-stile for electric cars so that passengers will register therti-selves as they get on the platform or pass into the body ofthe car. A plan of a car showing the turnstile in positionis given herewith. That at the left is in the entrance pas-sageway and that at the right is at the exit. The principalnovel feature of the device is that it oscillates—that is, thearms pass through an angle of 90 deg. only instead of 360deg. After they have made a quarter turn they return totheir normal position. This is necessary, because with thelimited space available on a c^ the usual type of turnstilecould not be used. H The spring which automalic^ly returns the arms to theiroriginal position is located in thebase of^lfie turnstile, as are also thedevices which make it necessary forthe arms to complete their quarter Door 1 ^.\^•-.\s\ ( w KXTKR CAR OF PTnr.ir serxice
