The chief object attained is that theconductor does not have access to the money until it hasbeen registered, but immediately upon its registration hecan take all he needs to make it available for change. Thiseliminates the use of the old-time fare boxes in which themoney dropped by the passengers was unavailable for useas change by the conductor. The fare is dropped into a slot at the top of the box, asshown in the illustration, and is instantaneously registeredand exposed to the conductors view, which of course en-ables him to detect bad coins and see who put them in.The last three or four nickels registered always remain insight so that it is possible for the conductor to detect thebad coin not only upon its registration, but even after thetwo or three fol
