AN EIGirr-CAR TRAIN IX THE 148TH STRKET INSPECTION SHOP Rapid Transit Companys system, two for the subway andthree for the elevated lines. The cars on the Broadwaydivision are cared for in an underground shop which isformed by a widening of the subway between the 137th and145th Street stations to allow trackage for 150 cars. Theother subway barn is at 148th Street and Lenox Avenue recently been completed and in construction follows theoriginal building, which it may be interesting to note isone of the pioneer reinforced concrete car shops and, infact, was by far the largest of its kind when erected in1903. The inspection shop is a steel structure made up offour rows of center columns, which consist of i6-ft. bays, STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXXL No. 14. supporting the roof trusses. The foundations for thesecenter columns are concrete piers mounted on piles. Afterthe erection of the steel skeleton the walls were constructedby using furring channels on which expanded metal lathswere
