^^trtiet Railway ,J:urnaJ FIG. I.—BK.XCKET CONSTRUCTION FOR CURVES a type of bracket construction for curves which preservesthe vertical position of the supports for the working con-ductor. In this type the push-off or steady strain has beeneliminated, and a pull-off substituted which clamps aroundthe porcelain insulator at the end of the arm. The upperend of this pull-off is anchored to the messenger betweenthe suspender arms and the lower end secured to the trolleywire. In this way the strain is removed from the insulatorcarrying the messenger wire. There are secondary insula-tors on the arm on either side of the petticoat messengerinsulator. In case the main insulator fails these second-aries provide against the grounding of the line by insulatingthe messenger almost as effectively as the main insulator.

FIG. 2.—PYRAMIDAL GUYING TO WOOD STR.\INS SHOWINGBOTH ROLLER AND PETTICOAT INSULATORS,THE LATTER WITH AUXILIARIES In Fig. 2 are shown two different types of bracket con-struction with both the messenger and the trolley guyed tothe same wood strain insulator. The first of these repre-sents the old method of roller insulator for voltages up to6ooo volts, with pyramidal bridle, while the second showsthe petticoat messenger insulator and the pyramidal guying to wood strains with secondary insulators as describedin connection with Fig. i. In both cases illustrated in Fig.2 the steady wires to the strain insulator are run from thesuspender rods on either side of . the brackets. In Fig. 3 is shown the bracket construction with auxiliaryinsulators and pyramidal guying. In this form a yoke is
