Closely adjacent to the great coalfields ofAlabama, with vast deposits of iron in the neighboringmountain ranges, the city of Birmingham is in an unusuallystrong industrial position and the field for manufacturingis being rapidly developed. The street railway system com-prises 112 miles of track, of which 32.3 miles are doubletrack. The maximum ride on a 5-cent fare is 14.78 milesand the average daily passenger traffic is 60,000. and Wylam. At the Birmingham station are the offices ofthe freight traffic manager, T. G. Brobston. Two sidetracks and a transfer platform are provided at Birminghamfor the receipt and delivery of express freight. As far aspossible all storage of freight is avoided at this point.Freight is brought to the station by the shippers and isaccepted for transportation up to within fifteen minutes ofthe leaving time of the train. Each car is then locked andcannot be opened until it reaches the proper authorized
