As the sub-way rolling stock iseither of all-steel orfire-retardant con-struction, the Inter-borough Rapid Tran-sit Company mayjustly boast that it isthe first railway inthe world to housefireproof cars in afireproof building. Of the three baysinto which the 148thStreet plant is di-vided, the northern isused for inspection asdescribed in theStreet RailwayJournal of April 4,while the middle andsouthern bays consti-tute respectively thetruck and machineshops. The middlebay is 240 ft. long andcontains five tracks;the southern bay is240 ft. X 60 ft., has one track and contains a mezzanine office floor over stor-age locker and toilet rooms. The shops are heated with avacuum return steam system.

SECOND STEP IN DISMANTLING A SUBWAY CAR: CRANE TAKING TRUCK TO THE OVERHAULING SHOP. a 25-ton Shaw crane which spans the entire bay. Thetrucks are then carried in a chain hanger by this crane tothe back of the truck shop for disassembly. There the April 25, 1908.) STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 677 crane is relieved of all lighter work by Pedrick & Ayerpneumatic hoists which take wheel sets or motors out ofthe truck frame as shown in the accompanying views. Itwill be seen that these hoists have a runway on horses con-siderably wider than the regular track gage. The horsesare either stationary or are mounted on wheels so that theyand their burdens are easily pushed along a special trackto the extreme rear of the truck dismantling section. Atthis point the load is readily transferred to one of the 3^-ton Northern telphers which travel on an I-beam extendingthe full length of the machine shop and all the way acrosseach end of the truck shop.
