g. 7 min. Thenearest example for purposes of com-parison is afforded by Fitzalan Squarelayout, Sheffield, which, however, isabout 45 ft. less in one direction andabout 30 ft. in the other. Whereasthat junction has curved tracks on twosides only, the Newcastle layout con-tains curved tracks on three sides,forming two 3-Y curves, thus increas-ing the number of compound castings. There are 136 pieces in the layout,the total weight of castings being 50tons. The longest switch is 17 ft. andconsists of a moveable switch and twocrossings combined and weighs 1792 lb.,while its mate weighs 1233 lb and car-ries one crossing at the toe end. Theaverage length of the switches is 12 ft.with 9-ft. tongues and they weigh 1736lb. per pair. There are five large three-day crossings, averaging1344 lb. each. The center star crossings are of theordinary type except one, which has legs about 10 ft.long on each side so as to connect up two sides ofthe junction, and weighs 1008 lb.
