XIX. No. 13. LECTURE ON SINGLE PHASE TRACTION In a lecture by W. S. Murray before the Electrical En-gineering Society of Columbia University on Wednesday,March 6, much interesting information was given concern-ing single-phase traction in general and the particularmethod employed by the New York, New Haven & Hart-ford Railroad in substituting electric for steam locomotives. It was shown that in changing over from steam to elec-tricity during the early stage of transition it is desirableto employ as much of the old equipment as possible. Thusthe old tracks can be used with the simple addition ofproper bonds; and by using locomotives rather thanmotor cars neither the freight nor the passenger rollingstock need be altered. A determination of the exacttype of locomotive will in general depend upon the service. For strictly local suburban work the low-voltage direct-cur-rent locomotive deserves careful consideration, but for long-distance service, high-tension alternating-current locomo-

one stops are made. The average distance between stops is2.2 miles, the average (or schedule) speed is 26 m. p. h.,and the maximum speed does not exceed 45 m. p. h. Theaverage trailing load of the New Haven trains is 210 tons, and while the locomotive will handle this tonnage in theabove schedule with ease it will with equal facility handlea trailing load of 300 tons, in express service, within thezone of the present electrification. In calculating the power required for hauling trains Mr.Murray assumed 40, 45 and 50 watt-hours per ton mile forexpress, express-local and local trains, respectively. Bycareful indication of steam locomotives in the above serviceshe had found that these assumptions were well on the safeside, some trains, in express service, actually showing anenergy consumption of only 31 watt-hours per ton-mile. The locomotive is equipped with 62-in. drivers, which, together with the extra weight of the auxiliary devices andcontrol mechanisms, give a center of gravity appr
