XXX. Xo. if>. AN UNDERHUNG INSULATOR NEW STYLE OF VESTIBULE The Locke Insulator Manufacturing Company of Victor,N. Y., is now making a suspension type insulator which issometimes called the underhung insulator. It consists es-sentially of several unit insulators of moderate size at-tached mechanicallyso as to form astring of insulatingunits of great me-chanical and electri-cal strength. Its mainadvantage lies inthe fact that it per-mits indefinite ex-pansion by the addi-tion of units, and asthe distance betweenthe transmission linewire and the earthis very great, staticstrains are reducedto a minim u m,whereas in the or-dinary pin type ofinsulator there isconsiderable staticstrain between theline wire and sup-port, due to the factthat they are ordi-narily not more thanthree inches apart.As its name signi-fies, the suspendedinsulator depends from the under side of the cross arm.or structural steel support. The method of application isclearly shown in the accompanying illustrations.
