On the other hand, if the motorman throws fullpressure at once into the cylinder the retardation during thefirst part of the stop is much greater, and, as the speed gradu-ally decreases, the motorman gradually releases the cylinderpressure in such a way as to keep the retardation of the trainat a maximum. The amount gained in retardation duringthe first part of the stop by the proper method of brakingmakes the time required for the entire stop much less than in theother case, the time saved being represented by the distancesS T. The air compressors used on the electric locomotives eachconsists of a duplex, single acting vertical air pump, motordriven. The piston displacement is 75 cu. ft. per minutewhen operating at 600 volts, and against a tank pressure of1 30 lbs. per square inch. The air compressor is intended to operate on 600 volts, andfor such operation the motors are always connected in series. Plate XIII
