It is alllaid on concrete foundations, bonded, asa rule, with compressed or pin-drivencopper bonds, though some lines haveplastic bonds and others cast and ther-mit welded joints. Pavements vary,some being granite blocks, someasphalt, but the majority consist ofwooden blocks on edge. Nearly all feeders in the center of thecity are underground. Some of theoriginal installations, however, stillmaintain the overhead system, which isanything but ornamental. In track work there is a tendency todrift away from the manganese steelcentered frogs and switches, using in-stead built-up pieces made of regularrail sections, which seem to be giving good results. Manyof the lines use trailers, the trailer generally being a work-mans car. The space between the trailer and motor car isguarded by a fender of special design to prevent the peo-ple who alight from the motor car being hit by the trailer.No registers are used, as the conductor sells tickets.
