CAR OF THE METROPOLITAN WEST SIDE ELEVATED RAILWAY READY FOR SERVICE the apparatus under the car. With it, to obtain sufficeintcooling of the compressed air, radiating coils were hung onthe outer side of the girders. In the new car the decreaseddepth of the side I-beams permitted these radiating coils tobe hung under the car, and their location is well shown inone of the accompanying reproductions from a photograph.An increased cooling effect on the air in the tanks wasobtained by hanging the tanks below the side I-beams. Infact they were placed so low that it was not advisable toput the customary drain cocks underneath, so to permitdrainage the tanks were hung with one end about 3 ins. except the short ones are run in the space over the steelplates and underneath the wood floor. The conduits werebuilt in this space during the construction of the car andare held in position in such a manner that vibration is im-possible. Those terminating in the jumper receptacles onthe end of the car
