58o STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXIX. No. 14. happens that heavy freight trains must be provided with apushing locomotive in addition to the locomotive at the headof the train. In such cases it is practically out of the ques-tion to connect the two locomotives on the multiple-unitsystem, since all the cars between the two locomotives can-not possibly be equipped with an electric train line. Thetwo locomotives must therefore operate independently ofone another and, as with steam operation, be controlled bysignals. With the same types of locomotives and with ex-actly the same driving-wheel diameters an equal distributionof the load between the two locomotives is assured withthree-phase current. With unequal driving-wheel diame-ters, however, the load would be distributed very unequally,
