and ofthe windows, the exterior of the car is washed ofif every third night with Phoenix car washer and cold water. Theinterior is washed thoroughly every two weeks. The floorsand seats of the summer cars are blown out with air everynight just before being run into the shop, air being obtainedfrom the compressor plant in the shop. About one minuteis required per car, and the adoption of air for this workhas enabled the cleaning force to be cut to one-third itsformer number. Each day the reflectors of the head-lights are cleaned, the globes wiped out, and new carbonsare put in and the light is then tested. The work requiresone mans time continuously. The method of overhaul-ing motors, however, has its effect. The decrease in arm-ature troubles may be judged from the fact that whereseven winders were formerly employed, two men and a boynow do all the winding, including the manufacture of thearmature and field coils for almost twice the former numberof cars. Motors are overhauled by inspection rather thanby mileage, and as much of the work as it is possible to doon the car-house floor is done there rather than under thecar. Motors of the GE-800 type are removed from thetruck bodily and are gone over on the car-house fl
