egasRailway Company, the two functions werecombined and a new power plant was con-structed on a site well adapted both for therailway and the electric light and power business. THE ROUTEThe railway line starts in Las Vegasfrom the Santa Fe station, and within afew minutes has left the town to traverseone of the most picturesque routes in thecountry. The vicinity of Las Vegas hasseveral great health resorts. Amongthose reached by the railway are theterritorial hospital for the insane, thehospital owned by the employees ofRailway, and the Montezuma Hotel. FREIGHT BUSINESS AND PROBABLEEXTENSIONSIn the Gallinas canon there are all told nine large damsand as many ice houses. The so-called ice harvest takesplace the latter part of December and in January and Feb-ruary. .During this ice harvest the company handles aboutfifty cars of ice per day. These dams are from 6 to 8 milesfrom the city of Las Vegas, and the average grade on therun is about 3 per cent, and in some cases, at the upper end

ICE SKATING ON ONE OF THE LAKES ALONG THE LINE OF THE LAS VEGASRAILWAY & POWER COMPANY the Santa FeHere there aresome hot springs which, together with the hotel, have notbeen exploited for the last two years, despite the fact that thelocation is very healthful and the springs are considered tobe among the best in the country. There appears to be littlequestion among Las Vegans that this could be built up intoa great health and pleasure resort by a good hotel man. Beforereaching the Montezuma the line passes by one of the finestrace tracks in the Southwest and along Gallinas Park, a well-cared-for grove full of shady paths, rustic seats, hidden of the canon from 4 per cent to 6 per cent. The electriclocomotive operated by the company usually hauls fromfifteen to twenty empty freight cars per day. During the iceharvest the company is compelled to hire a steam locomotivefrom the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad to helpbring up the balance of the empties needed. Coming downno
