F(G. 8.-T3RIDGE FROM THE ELEVATED TRAIN DISPATCHERS BUILDING, CROSSING THE SURFACE-CAR STORAGEYARD TO THE ELEVATED CAR STORAGE YARD AND TRACKS TO INSPECTION BUILDING the west l)ay is occupied by two tracks, one of whichleads to the elevator to the floor below. The truck-overhauling shop is on the west side, and the machineand blacksmith sections on the east side of the lower floor.The blacksmith shop is directly under the mill room, andboth of these departments are separated from the rest ofthe building by a brick fire-wall. Between the floors is a yard and the second floor of the main shop building. Thetriangular portion between the rear of this shop and theBushwick Avenue side serves as a room for coil baking andwinding. Adjoining this room is the lumber storage shedand yard, which is bounded by the last fire-wall of the ele-vated car-storage yard. In line with the main shop building is a two-story stock 174 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXIX. No. 5.

room 98 ft. long, in addition to the other store rooms along-side of the tracks, leading to the inspection shed and thecoal and iron store rooms on the Gillen Place side near theblacksmith shop. The office of the foreman of the inspec-tion shop is directly before the oil room and in front ofthe inspection shed. This location makes it easy for himto view everything going on in the yard, besides enablinghis clerks to check cars in and out of the shops with theleast labor. The remaining buildings on this plot, aside from theclub house of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit EmployeesBenefit Association, embrace a despatchers office and asignal tower at the double Y elevated connection in addi-tion to a new sub-station in the rear of the first four stor-age tracks.
