With this device about one and one-half hours are re-quired for one man to groove a commutator containing 117segments and remove the burrs from the edges of the seg-ments. The slots are grooved slightly deeper than it isintended that the commutator shall wear in order that theportion remaining may serve as a guide when the com-mutator is grooved again. It has been found that compara-tively dry brushes work best on the grooved commutators.When the brushes contain too much oil and grease there isa tendency for the resulting mixture of carbon, dust andoil to fill up the grooves and cause short circuits. The Sao Paulo Tramway, Light, Heat & Power Com-pany will ask shareholders for permission to increase thecapital from $8,500,000 to $10,000,000.
