e line construction of almostevery electric railway and power transmis-sion system was patterned after the stan-dards which were evolved from telegraphconstruction practice where the conditionswere not particularly exacting, and the pen-alty for breakdown was not great. The ab-solute necessity for reliability in a transmis-sion line that serves a public utility of suchmagnitude as the Long Island Railroad, re-quires a stability in all parts of the construc-tion that calls for the exercise of engineer-ing skill and foresight to a greater extentthan has hitherto been usually brought tobear. To give the continuous service whichconditions demand it is necessary to con-struct a line in which the chance of failurepart is reduced to a minimum, and thatbe torn down or seriously disabled, except ical sufficiency and stability to a degree of perfection thatwould afford the least possible chance for a shutdown fromany of the usual causes.
