One of the 500 H. P. Westinghouse 4 Cycle, Tandem, Double-ActingGas Engines direct connected to Alternating Current Generator. The Warren & Jamestown Single=Phase Railway is the first alternating current railwayin the world using gas power exclusivelyfor generating current. There is nostorage battery, or relay steam plant, tohelp out. The generators are mountedsolid on the engine shafts, and are runin parallel on the railway load withoutany difficulty. The entire plant isnormally operated by two men to ashift. The Westinghouse Single-Phase Systemhas many economical advantages. Notethe absence of cables on the overheadcatenary line construction; also the self-operating transformer station, as com-pared with the rotary converter sub-stations and attendants, necessary ondirect current systems.
