rocking grate is used, located at the top of thechamber and consisting of 2^4-in. square steel bars, roundedat the ends, to which levers are fastened which are operatedby eccentric on the shaft. The speed of flow of sand can beregulated by the amount of throw of these levers, or by thespeed with which they are operated. Thearrangement of this dryercauses the hottest air tocome in contact with thesand when it contains themost moisture and thoughthe latter is drawn downwith the sand, yet there issufficient heat in the sandas it falls to the bottom tocause this slight amountof moisture to evaporate. The supply of cold air andthe amount of fire shouldbe so regulated that thetemperature of the sand

The dryer shown on the diagram has, as stated, a fire cham-ber 5 ft. x 8 ft., a slat chamber, 8 ft. sq. and a flue, 4 ft. 6 ins.sq., for carrying off heated gases. It is quite important that as much height be obtained be-tween the top of the slat chamber and the bottom of the slatchamber as is practicable. In this case there is a fall, asstated, of about 58 ft. It has been found that the machine at Sixty-Fifth Streetand Second Avenue is of sufficient capacity for the drying offrom 250 cubic yards to 300 cubic yards of saturated sand inten hours; the conveying machinery, however, was designedto handle only 20 cubic yards of sand per hour. It has beenfound that the apparatus will very easily dry 225 yards of sandn a day of between nine and ten hours, provided that the firehas been started and the blowers run for a sufficient time toget the surfaces of the chamber warmed up before the wetsand is started through it. The comparative results obtained by this dryer and by usingthe stoves are
