The chairman of the North London Railway Company, atthe last annual meeting this February, reported a furtherdecrease in receipts from passengers, due mainly to the com-petition of electric tramways and railways, and stated that itwas practically impossible to attempt to meet the competitionuntil the electrification of suburban lines could be carried out. Contrary to this result are the statements made at the meet-ings of the Lancashire & Yorkshire and North Eastern Rail-way companies, where reference is made to the results ob-tained by the electrification of the Liverpool & Southport andNewcastle & Tyneside lines, respectively. The chairman of the Lancashire & Yorkshire RailwayCompany—Sir George Armitage—expressed satisfaction atthe results of the electrification, which has enabled them todo a much greater amount of work and
