an type of car shown in the illustrationfor the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern division of theXew York Central lines. This car is being equipped withthe Chase gasoline motor system, which Frank L. Chase,president of the Jamestown, Chautauqua & Lake Erie Com-pany and Chautauqua Steamboat Company, has been de-veloping for several years. This is the first car for gasolineoperation to be experimented with on the Vanderbilt lines,and railway men in general are looking forward with muchinterest to the trial trips which will shortly be made on aline between Cleveland and Willoughby. The car is operated by a gasoline engine in connectionwith an electric generator, the engine being 220 hp. All ofthe operating and propelling machinery is located beneaththe car. The car is operated from either end, similarly tothe ordinary type of electric car, and is handled in much thesame manner. It is electrically lighted, heated by hot waterand equipped with M. C. Unfortunately, it had to be photographed on astormy day, and therefore the picture of the exterior gives avery inadequate idea of the appearance. The interior is richly, though plainly, finished in mahog-any, with inlaid lines of white holly. The dome is of theEmpire style, tinted light green and decorated in gold. Ahardwood partition divides the smoking compartment fromthe rest of the car, and against the partition at one side is atoilet room of standard steam-car character. Seats 37 ins. March 17, 1906.)
