^™f* .\s ^^ ^ 1 ^H 7^m FIG. 4.—MACHINE FOR MAKING BRONZE BEARINGS of the different moulds. Although the surface of the face-plate is perfectly smooth and at right angles to the shaft I,it was found, nevertheless, that a spring action is necessarybetween the two, owing to the fine fins that are liable to format the edge of the gate. Each casting requires a mould espe-cially designed for its own requirements, as the part of themould against which the heavier part of the casting is maderequires a greater chilling eftect, and for this reason must bemade of metal having a greater chilling capacity. In theseexperiments, for the sake ,of comparing the different metalsand alloys for their chill effect, it was assumed that theproduct of the co-efiicient of heat conductivity multiplied intothe specific heat of any one metal or alloy represented therelative value of its chill effect. All results seemed toverify the correctness of this assumption. ♦-♦> CONVERTIBLE CARS FOR ROANOKE, VA.

It is ob-vious, hf)vvever, that it would be impossible to fill a mouldcompletely under these conditions, and therefore it is neces-sary that the tilting of the mould be gradually increased bysome sucii means as the eccentric W. This causes the end of The accompanying illustration shows a convertible car re-cently put in o)ieration by the Roanoke Railway & ElectricCompany, and received from the J. G. BrillCompany.
