SINGLE-PHASE LOCOMOTIVE DRAWING TRAIN ON SWEDISH STATE RAILWAYS stallation on account of using only one wire, the single-phasehydro-electric stations, the possibility of using a higher trol-ley voltage and the fact that commutator motors could beregulated with greater nicety for varying traffic conditions. Afurther reason given was that the single-phase apparatus hadbeen developed to a more practical stage than three-phaserailway apparatus. While it would have been interesting tocompare both systems under like conditions, it was felt thatthis would only complicate matters, and besides, the behavior probably be given up when the experiments cease. Two ofthe four locomotive boilers installed furnish steam to two270-hp DeLaval turbines, each of which is connected throughgearing to a double generator. The halves of the doublegenerator are connected in series while the generators them-selves are in parallel. Each half has four poles and themachines, when running at their normal speed of 75
