f the poles and trolley wireswere destroyed by fire and falling walls, many of the wiresbeing cut down ahead of the fire to facilitate the operationsof the fire department. As the car service was being operated upon many of thelines when their connections with the power house werebroken, such cars were left stalled upon the streets until suchtime as temporary connections could be made, and on Feb. 8fourteen of the companys lines outside the fire district werein operation. The United Railways & Electric Company was one of thefirst institutions in the city to rally from the despondencyof Blue Monday, the day following the fire, and many hoursbefore the smoke had lifted from the stricken city, tempo-rary offices for the various departments had been establishedwherever room could be obtained, and plans were underway for clearing the tracks of debris, restoring the over-head construction and repairing the damage to the powersystem. The main con-tents of the building consisted of ten boilers, rone of whichwere injured. In addition to the damage to this buildingand contents, the remnant of an old sugar refinery, at thecorner of Dugans wharf and Wood Street, south of thenew engine house, which was partially occupied by the com-pany as a storeroom, was completely burnt out with the ex-ception of the brick walls, which remained in fair condi-tion, and were soon afterward roofed in to serve as a tem-porary sub-station.
