COVERED RACKS FOR STORING IRON AND STEEL STOCK,OAKLAND TRACTION SHOPS by the companys engneer and built in the shops. It consistsof a 23-ft. jib crane, with pneumatic hoist, mounted on a plat-form on one end of a flat car. It is of built-up construction, thevertical mast consisting of a 3-in. pipe, 10 ft long, secured by 184 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXVII. No. 5. rear braces and supporting the jib by a ^4-in. rod, 18 ft. 6 ins.long. The jib consists of a 2^-in. pipe, 22 ft. 8 ins. long, crossbraced at the center and guyed by four ^-in. rods provided withturn buckles. An air cylinder, mounted on the jib by wrought-iron bands,consists of a /-in. pipe, 6 ft. 6 ins. long, bored out for the pistonhead. The air piston is a il/2-m. cold-rolled steel shaft, andbears at its outer end a 20-in. sheave, adapted for a two-partwire cable. The cable, the end of which is secured to the outer
