riters haveguaranteed a reduction in fire insurance rates which, at the costof installing the entire apparatus, will pay for the sprinklers,compressors and tanks at all the plants in approximately fiveyears, neglecting the single item of maintenance. The UnitedTraction Company has contracted with the General Fire Ex-tinguisher Company, of Providence, R. I., to install the com- as this building has a concrete roof, and the ceiling sprinklershave been omitted. In all cases the side lines will be placedabout 8 ft. above the car house floor, in line with the top ofside windows of the cars. Owing to the general construction of the buildings, the ceil-ing sprinkler heads have been spaced so that each one coversapproximately 70 sq. ft. The aisle sprinklers are placed not over 7 ft. apart midwaybetween cars, and where cars are over 4 ft. apart two lineshave been put in. At each of the four plants the 25,000-gal. tank will be placedoutside of the building on a steel tower 75 ft. high. From the

The installation in the Lansingburg buildings includes a wetand dry-pipe system of 2674 Grinnell automatic sprinklers, andfire extinguishing apparatus distributed on the ceiling of thecar house proper, on the ceiling of the loft and between thetracks on side line piping placed about 8 ft. above the car housefloor.
