dgoes through the dif¥erent streetsand avenues where the feeders arelaid. It shows the sections betweencircuit breakers (which are indi-cated in the drawing by the lettersC, B and H), each feeder thatsupplies current to the trolley, polenumbers, the points where thefeeders dead end and the exactlength of each feeder. This recordsthe amount of resistance to be over-come and the drop of voltage in theline at any given point. The feedtaps themselves are not shown, asit is generally understood that theyare cut in about every 500 ft. There is another very importantuse in connection with these plans, and that is in connection with trou-bles. For example, a reportis re-ceived that at a certain pole, whosenumber is given, or in its vicinity, the feeder is grounded through theinsulator pin, as is often the caseafter a thunder storm, where ironpoles are used. By referring tothe map the lineman can go direct-ly to the pole and make repairs. The same method can be applied to STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL.
Text Appearing After Image:
986 breaks in trolley wires, span wires and strain wires. Thepole numbers are placed on the street side of all polesand the pins are located by being on the street side or thefield side, the latter phrases being known to the linemen andhelp the trouble hunter very much. For instance, a linemanis sent to the end of a line to make repairs, and while therereceives word that feeder No. 7, on the second pin street side, pole No. 9018, is giving trouble. The man can go immediatelyto the point, make repairs and report the cause of the troublein a very short time. The Hartford Street Railway Company also has a diagram ofits track construction showing the switches and cross-overs,each of which is given a name. These names are printed inthe conductors regulation book for his guidance in makingreports of trouble that may occur at any of those points. Thetrack diagram also shows the poles which support the overheadfrogs, and their numbers. _ NOVEL CONSTRUCTION AND WORK CAR In the accompanying engr
