Another in-teresting feature of the car equipmentis to be noted in the application of theEames vacuum brakes, in addition tothe standard New York automatic air-brake equipment, so that the wreckingcar may be operated by either a motorcar or one of the former steam locomo-tives, if necessary, a few of the latterbeing still retained for switching; itwill be remembered that the old steamlocomotives were operated with thevacuum brakes, so that this provisionmakes the wrecking car universal inits application. The handling of accidents to rollingstock upon a city elevated system re-quires a very different treatment fromthat which is possible upon surfaceroads, which fact consequently hashad a marked influence upon theequipment of the tool car. Every facility known in the form of mechanical appli-ances for dismantling and handling equipment has been pro-vided for removal as well as also for patching up, when possi-ble, to permit of the line being cleared. The extent to whichthe detail of this equipment has been carried out may be bestappreciated by reference to the accompanying list of toolswhich must be kept in each bin. A copy of this list is postedconspicuously in each car and is used as the guide in checkingup the equipment, it being rigidly required that all tools calledfor in the list shall at all times be in their place.
