ily readable at night if the streetis fairly well lighted, yet in outlying portions of the city andin suburban districts some difficulty is experienced by passen- OBSERVATION CAR IN MONTREAL The increasing demand from observationparties for a car which would be as satis-factory as a coach or tally-ho has lead to theconstruction by the Montreal Street RailwayCompany of a car for this especial purpose. The objection to the ordinary car for thisservice is that the roof of the car obscuresobservation to any height above the shopc windows. The Montreal car avoids this bydispensing entirely with the roof. As shown, the seats are arranged in seven tiers, withthe entrance from the back of the car. Twoarches, made up of ornamental scroll work, carry fifteen lamps each for illumination at night. In the rearof the car are lockers, in which any supplies may be carriedif the car is chartered by a private party. The design of the car has been registered and a patent for ithas been applied for. »♦«

The Singapore Electric Tramways, Limited, with $2,000,000capital, will electrically equip the Singapore Tramways, anda side company, the East India Construction Syndicate, isformed to take over and re-equip all the other tramways inSingapore and in other ports of the Straits Settlements. THE NEW ROOFLESS OBSERVATION CAR USED IN MONTREAL gers not being able to see the signs at a distance. Various ar-rangements of lamps have been made for illuminating the sign, one of which is shown in the first of the accompanying illus-trations. A more successful arrangement, however, is that in whichthe lamp, while fully illuminating the sign, shall not bevisible to the passenger waiting for the car, so as to partiallyblind his view of the sign. Such a method of sign illuminationis in use upon some of the cars and has proven very satisfac-tory—so much so that its use will probably be extended to theentire system. ) 204 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL.
