placed an additional tap for supplying current to a com-pensated alternating-current series motor for operating the airpumps. It will be observed that the grounding point of the lighting transformer is at the neutral electromotive force pointof the alternating-current motor. An entirely distinct pump-ing equipment is operated by a small series-wound, 500-voltdirect-current motor which is controlled automatically by theair pressure. The diagram on page 508 shows the connectionsin simple form. The motors, which are of the standard Westinghouse single-phase type, are rated at 75-hp each, and are geared for a maxi-mum speed of 45 m.p.h. for local service. AUTO-TRANSFORMER The main auto-transformer is of the shell form, air-cooledtype. Before shipment it was subjected to a test of 10,000volts between winding and iron, and was operated at doublepotential for ten minutes. It is designed for operation at 25cycles, a frequency which has been adopted as standard forsingle-phase railway service.

5o8 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXV. No. n. TROLLEYS The illustration of the bow trolley given on page 506 showsthe standard form of collector designed for high-potential alter-nating-current circuits. The trolley is mounted upon a thor-oughly insulated platform, and is raised, lowered and con-trolled by the motorman by means of compressed air. Thereis therefore no danger at any time of contact with live parts ofthe trolley. The bow carries a large, flat aluminum shoe, whichmakes contact with the under side of the trolley wire. Forlow-potential service, whether alternating or direct current, amodification of the Union Standard trolley is provided, as thebow type could not be used in the city of Indianapolis.
