FIG. 2.—GENERAL VIEW OF METROPOLITAN ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE at a maximum speed of 36 m.p.h.; and a freight train of 250tons, exclusive of locomotive, over the Circle at a maximumspeed of 27 m.p.h. The motors of this locomotive are of the usual series-woundtramway type, and there is nothing novel in the winding. Thedrawing, Fig. 3, shows the details of the ventilating air ducts. The air is admitted to the motor at a pressure of 4 ozs. persquare inch, and the mouth of the duct is so formed as to dis-tribute the entering air over the entire end of the armatureand field coils. The cover of the motor is of the ventilatedtype, so that this air, after it has absorbed the heat from thearmature and field coils, passes into the atmosphere. There are four motors with each locomotive, and these arearranged in pairs. Each pair of motors has a separate turretcontroller of the Westinghouse electro-pneumatic type. Thesecontrollers are manipulated by a single master switch and arenot of the automatic ty
