The engravings, reproduced from recent photo-graphs, convey a good idea not only of the details of construc-tion that are being followed, but also show the various portionsof the plant and construction force at work. One of thepictures on this page shows a steam shovel working in theballast pit at Palmyra. As there is a grade running each wayfrom this pit but five cars can be used at once. With the steamshovel the time of loading averages 3 minutes to each car, andthe economy of using steam-driven loading apparatus in thisconnection is very apparent. Another of the pictures represents the track force at workback-tieing. As before stated, it is the practice to lay the firsttrack in skeleton form on the rough grade. The second track the rails.
