the Long IslandRailroad is entirely electrified, the Long Island City locationwill be in about the center of distribution. The three-phase alternating current, generated at the powerhouse, is carried in conduits through the built-up portion ofLong Island City as far as the railroad yards. From here thecables are brought overhead and carried on a specially designedlattice steel-pole line. The construction of this pole line ismost interesting, and represents an advance over anythinghitherto attempted in this direction. The poles are of verystrong construction and are mounted on concrete foundations.Wherever the transmission lines cross telegraph or telephonewires, the latter are led underneath the high-tension wires, thevery substantial character of the heavy electric cables preclud-ing their breaking and falling across the telegraph wires.
