The total length of single track is 14^ miles, laid in 9*4miles of route, to a gage of 3 ft. 6 ins., with rails of the girdertype, weighing 86 lbs. per lineal yard. Each rail-joint is doublebonded with 000000 S. W. G. copper bonds. The lines withinthe city are laid for the most part as center-pole construction,but the eastern portion of the route being outside the cityboundary, is laid as single line, with passing places equippedon the side-pole system. With the exception of a short branch line which runs to therace course, the route runs parallel with the water front, andaside from a short length at Quarry Bay is practically level.At Quarry Bay some road grading has been done, the originalgrade of 1 in 10 having been reduced to 1 in 15.
