tical-compound enclosed high-speed steam engine, the circulating pump be-ing coupled direct; while the air pumps aredriven through a single-reduction system ofgearing. The condenser is designed for deal-ing with about 30,000 lbs. of steam per hour, and produces a vacuum to within about 4 ins.of the barometric pressure. The air pumps are of the two-throw, vertical, single-acting Edwards pattern, and areworked from a pair of cranks upon a shaft working in cast-ironbearings mounted on A frames, which is connected to the en-gine shaft through a rawhide pinion gearing into a spur wheel. The circulating pump is of centrifugal type, and is capableof providing the requisite circulating water and of deliveringit to the distributing troughs of the feeding trays inside thecooling tower, which is of the Klein Companys usual standardconstruction. The pump casing and disc are of cast iron, andthe latter is carried on a steel shaft coupled direct to the §42 street railway journal. (Vol. XXVI. No. ig.

The discharged water from the air pumps is taken by meansof a small pump driven by the same engine, and is deliveredinto the cleaning apparatus. When freed from oil and otherdeleterious matter, it is takenonce moreby the feed-pumpsto recommence its cycle ofoperations. The cleaning apparatus, towhich reference has just beenmade, and which is capableof dealing with the maximumamount of feed-water re-quired, is constructed uponthe Davis-Perrett system, which combines an electricaltreatment of water with afilter of the Wilson automaticself-cleaning type. In thisprocess the condensed wateris received in wooden treat-ing tanks, divided by metallicelectrodes, which are so ar-ranged as to cause the waterto circulate from inlet to out-let.
