uble-drumwater-tube boilers of the Babcock & Wilcoxtype, arranged to burn ordinary Japanese en-gine slack. Each boiler has 3654 sq. ft. ofheating surface, evaporates 12,000 lbs. ofwater per hour and works at pressure of 160lbs. per square inch. In addition to thesteam and water gages, each boiler isfitted with a spring safety valve and adead weight safety valve. Water is supplied to the boilers bytwo Blake & Knowles feed-pumps, which take water fromeither the storage tank or the hot well, and feed the boilerseither direct or through a Green economizer. In case of mis-hap the economizer may be cut out, the flue gases being con-veyed to the chimney by means of a by-pass or auxiliary flueand the feed-water being pumped direct into the boilers without typhoons of noted severity, exceptional care had to be takenwith both the foundations and the building of the shaft.
