SWING BRIDGE—HAARLEM When the work was at its height on the entire line, there werein use 2360 laborers, two steam locomotives, one electric loco-motive, thirty-one steam pile drivers, three steam spouters, onesteam crane, sixty hand pile drivers, one steam bucket riggerand 165 flatboats and scows. TRACK CONSTRUCTION The permanent way along the Government High Road, andalso along the private right of way, is practically a steam rail-way construction. The rails are what is known as the Vignole(or T) section, weighing 70 lbs. per yard. The section is thestandard of the American Society of Civil Engineers for thatweight. The paving of the High Road was practically relaid the en-tire length to the stipulated datum level of Amsterdam. The ties are creosoted Norway pine, 23 cm x 11.5cm, the upper edges being beveled. The. rails are fastened tothe ties by screw bolts. Double concealed bonds are placed ateach joint. The length of route along the canal is 13417 km. At the village of Halfweg, which, as its name indicates, issituated approximately half-way between Amsterdam andHaarlem, the line crosses two canals.
