AN EXAMPLE OF THE OVERHEAD WORK made with these cars. Five miles east of Alliance is the townof Sebring. Three immense potteries hav€ produced a townwith a resident population of nearly 3000, where three yearsago there was scarcely a hamlet. Large numbers of the em-ployees of these plants live in Alliance, and the company gives 6 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXV. No. i. extra service morning and evening for the benefit of these peo-ple. Beloit, an agricultural village, has 500 population, whileDamascus is somewhat smaller. This district was settledlargely by Quakers, who still predominate. They were ex-tremely liberal in the sale of right of way and are good patronsof the road. At Damascus is a famous Quaker university.Salem, the present easterly terminus of the road, has a popula-tion of 12,000, and is an important iron manufacturing center.

A FIVE-CAR EXCURSION TRAIN ON THE STARK ELECTRICRAILWAY It is the home of the Buckeye Engine Company, one of the old-est and best known manufacturers of steam engines in thiscountry; the Deming Company, pump manufacturers; SilverManufacturing Company, castings; and one of the largest nailplants of the American Steel & Wire Company. Going intoSalem, the company bought a private right of way adjoiningan alley at the rear of Main Street, the principal street, run-ning east and west. This brings it to within 200 ft. of the CityHall. It secured a franchise for a Y at the head of this street,
