Curiouslyenough, that which seemed to occasion most comment amongthe street railroad men was running the machines in oppositedirections on four sections of the same track. While of small dimensions, these motors could hardly becalled toys, since one of them was frequently made to towa flat car loaded with 3 or 4 tons of iron, and as they weresingle-reduction sprocket geared, the armatures were not in-frequently suspected of smoking and other bad habits. The control was by commuted fields and carbon-rod rheo-stats, and the brakes were electric of the bipolar moving-corevariety. The track was 16-lb. rail of 22-in. gage, and spikedon ties projecting well above the ballast, without any attemptat other insulation.
