the illuminated sign problem. The sign is well illustrated in the accompanying figure,which shows the roof of two cars. In the foreground may beseen the open front of the lamp guard, showing the two lampsin place. Beyond may be seen the roof of a second car, showingthe exterior of the lamp guard, the hooks for retaining thetrolley cord and the sign to be illuminated just above. Thelower hook guard on this particular car is a relic of formertimes, and is not now necessary. This method of illuminatingsigns has not yet been placed upon the market, and is manu-factured by the Worcester Consolidated Street Railway Com-pany for its own use. ♦♦♦ INTERURBAN CARS FOR THE AUBURN & SYRACUSERAILROAD Two handsome interurban coaches have lately been deliveredto the Auburn & Syracuse Railroad Company by the G. Whenthe supplementary cut-off gage is not in use the fence is de-tached from the tongue, and the latter is turned over in its slotso as to make a flush surface on the table, as indicated in thefirst accompanying engraving. The machine is driven througha countershaft and idler jack, by which any combination ofdrive connections may be easily made. It is estimated that thismachine will require only ^4 hp for driving under normal con-ditions of operation.
