anel is a three-pole double-throw switch, with fuses for motor-driven blowers. Next, thereis a blank panel for the a. c. side of another rotary, and it will have similar instruments, with the ex-ception of blower switches. The next panel is forthe d. c. side of the rotary, and contains a 1200-amp. M. K. circuit breaker, main switch, rotaryfield rheostat, Thomson recording wattmeter andan illuminated dial 1000 ammeter. The circuitbreaker has a low-voltage release coil, whichoperates also in connection with speed-limit-ing switch on converter. The two followingd. c. 600-volt feeder panels have M. K. cir-cuit breakers; 1500-amp. static ammeters, mainswitches and M. D. lightning arresters. The d. c.feeders are carried through clay conduits to a dis-tributing pole, where they are tapped to the trol-leys. At one end of the board is a d. c. 750-voltastatic voltmeter on a swinging bracket, and on theother end, adjoining tine exciter panels, is a 175- i3o STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL (Vol. XXIV. No. 4

The generator panels contain instruments which serve ascombined wattmeters and power-factor indicators. They are oper-ated by double-throw switches. When the switch is in the upperposition it throws the potentialcoil of the wattmeter in phase withcurrent on the current-coil onunity power-factor. A lag or leadof current out of phase with e. m.f., of course, reduces the watts, thetrue power-factor being shown bythe reading of instruments. Withthe switch in the downward positionthe potential coil of wattmeter isconnected across the two outsidelegs, thus forming a potential90 degs. out of phase withcurrent at unity power-factor andwattmeter will indicate zero.
