As may be seen from the plans, the various depart-ments are separated by extra heavy 16-in. fire-walls, and alldoors are of the self-closing, tin-covered, rolling type, forisolation of any department in case of fire. In all cases thedivision walls extend for some distance above the roofs, 24 ins.being the minimum projection, while in the case of the paintstore room, the most dangerous fire hazard of the entire shop,the side walls are carried some 4 ft. above the surrounding roof.Thus, in case of fire in that room, the side walls, projecting upas they do above the roof, would act as a chimney and carrythe flames up to a point where they might be easily taken careof, and not come in contact with the rest of the building; thisis a very valuable and effective arrangement for the paintstores, and should be made use of in other shops where largepaint stocks are carried.
