Allthree companies are controlled and operated by practically thesame interests. Some of the interesting features of both rail-way systems will be described in the following notes:DOUBLE-DECK CORONADO CAR Probably the most conspicuous characteristic of the Coron-ado Railroad is the large double-deck car shown in Fig. 1,which is used throughout the summer and whenever the trafficwarrants it. This car is of Brill manufacture, and is 41 ft. inlength over all. It has a seating capacity of eighty, and cancarry 150 people. The roof of the upper deck is 20 ft. abovethe rails, and the trolley wire is placed 4 ft. above that. Thecar is mounted on Brill maximum-traction trucks, equippedwith two G. E.-67 35-hp motors. This latterbrake consists of a hemp rope, wound one complete turn abouta 16-in. cast-iron drum, that is mounted on the small idle axleof the truck. With this brake the car can be quickly brought toa stop, and although the rope has to be replaced at intervalsvarying from one to three months, the construction on thewhole is an inexpensive but effective one. The rope on thedrum is kept lubricated a little, so that it will not tighten upof itself when running loose.
