F.Aspinwall, the general manager of the company, who long agorealized the possibilities of great traffic development in theexcellent residential districts which lie between Liverpool andSouthport, and on the north side of the latter town, and whichcould not be satisfactorily served by a steam-train equipment.The history of the equipment of the line, subsequent to the decision to employ electric power, can be briefly summed up.The entire contract, with the exception of the rolling stock,which was made at the Horwich and Newton Heath Worksof the railway company, was entrusted to Dick, Kerr & Com-pany, Ltd., of London, Preston and Kilmarnock, who have com-pleted their work in a remarkably short time. The distance between Liverpool and Southport is nearly iSy2miles, the total length of track equipped being practicallyequivalent to 47 miles of single line. The grades on the roadare slight, and there are but few curves, the steepest gradebeing a short length of 1 in 85 near Waterloo, and the sharpestcurve one of 462 ft. at Southport. With these exceptions theline is level and straight. There are fourteen intermediatestations, which lie at an average distance of about 1 mile aparton the southernmost portion of the route, but are more widelyseparated on the northern portion.
